Spring is here! Who better deserves warmer temperatures than those of us in the Cleveland area who have endured these tough winters for years? The Indians are coming back, flowers are poking their heads out of the earth and family and friends are gathering together to celebrate all that is fresh and renewed. Most of us fill our tables with beautiful brunches, spiral baked ham dinners or elegant lamb roasts. What wine to pair with such an array of dining options?
If brunch is your family’s time to congregate, a tried and true sparkling wine is in order. Nothing says brunch like a fresh, crisp, dry sparkling wine that pairs well with egg dishes as well as carved meats. Light, delicate white wines are a perfect match with dinners of honey baked or spiral hams. The sweet fruit of the light wine sets off the salt of the ham. Reds that are fruit forward can handle the ham glaze well are a good choice for the red wine enthusiast. Lambs dishes need a smooth powerful classic red with tannins, good acidity and a long finish that compliment that strong flavors of the lamb. And lets not forget the wine to pair with your desserts (read: Chocolate Easter Bunny that we make our kids share with us). Our new favorite is the Voulet 2016 Malvassia di Casorzo; Piemonte, Italy. A fresh pleasant slighty sparkling red wine with bright acidity and a hint of sweetness from notes of raspberries and violets. It is best served chilled.
